Shopify, headless and custom commerce

E-commerce Development Judged on Revenue Per Session, Not on Launch Day

A store is easy to launch and hard to make profitable. The build is a few months. The part that decides whether it worked is everything after: page speed on a mid-range phone, checkout friction, returns handling, and whether search finds the product a customer half-remembers.

We build and replatform stores for US and UK merchants with those things treated as requirements rather than post-launch optimization. Core Web Vitals go in the acceptance criteria, because on commerce they are measurable revenue.

The problem

From a Slow Storefront to a Store That Converts on Mobile

As an e-commerce development company, these are the six leaks we find in almost every audit, in rough order of cost.

01

A slow storefront on mid-range mobile

Three seconds to LCP on a two-year-old Android is not a technical score, it is a measurable share of sessions that leave. Every app you have installed on the theme added to it.

02

Search that returns nothing

A shopper types a description rather than your exact product name and gets an empty state. Internal search zero-results is one of the highest-intent, lowest-monitored metrics in commerce.

03

A checkout with too many steps

Forced account creation, surprise shipping costs at the last step, or a payment method your market expects and you do not offer. Each one has a measurable drop rate.

04

Stock that lies

The website says available, the warehouse disagrees, and the customer finds out after paying. Oversells cost you the margin, the refund fee and the customer.

05

Product data nobody owns

Descriptions from three suppliers in three formats, missing attributes, no structured data. Your products cannot rank and your filters cannot filter.

06

Returns handled by email

An RMA process running on a shared inbox and a spreadsheet. It works until volume doubles, and then it is the reason your support team is drowning in January.

Our free store audit measures all six against your actual field data rather than a lab score. Most merchants are surprised by which one is costing them the most, and it is very rarely the one they were about to spend money on.

The work

Comprehensive E-Commerce Development Services for Scalable Growth

Whether you are launching, replatforming or trying to fix conversion on something that already works.

01

Shopify and Shopify Plus

Custom themes built for speed rather than assembled from apps, plus checkout extensions, B2B catalogs and Shopify Functions for pricing logic. Most merchants under about $20M are best served here and we will say so.

What you get

  • Custom theme, not a bought one
  • App audit to remove speed tax
  • Checkout extensions and Functions
02

Headless commerce

A fast frontend over Shopify, BigCommerce, commercetools or Saleor. The right answer when content and commerce need to be one experience, or when your catalog is large enough that theme performance stops being fixable.

What you get

  • Next.js or Astro storefront
  • Incremental static regeneration
  • Preview environments for merchandisers
03

Custom commerce platforms

For business models the platforms do not fit: complex configurators, quote-to-order, subscriptions with unusual rules, marketplaces, or regulated products. Built only when the platforms genuinely cannot do it.

What you get

  • Pricing and configuration engine
  • Multi-vendor or marketplace logic
  • Custom fulfillment workflows
04

ERP, PIM and 3PL integration

Connecting the store to the systems that actually run the business, so stock is true, orders flow without rekeying, and your finance team stops reconciling by hand.

What you get

  • Real-time or near-real-time stock sync
  • Order and fulfillment integration
  • Returns and refund flow automated
05

Replatforming and migration

Magento to Shopify, WooCommerce to headless, or off a custom build nobody can maintain. Done with URL mapping and redirects planned first, because the usual replatform disaster is an organic traffic collapse.

What you get

  • Full URL and redirect mapping
  • SEO-preserving migration plan
  • Historical order and customer migration
06

Conversion and CWV remediation

An existing store that is slow or converting badly. We profile it on field data, tell you what is actually causing it, fix the causes and leave a performance budget in CI.

What you get

  • Field data analysis, not just Lighthouse
  • Prioritized fixes with expected revenue impact
  • CI budget so it stays fixed

Commerce AI

AI in commerce, past the chatbot

Most retail AI pitches start and end with a chatbot. Chatbots are the least valuable AI feature in commerce and the most commonly built, because they are easy to demo.

  • Semantic product search Shoppers describe what they want rather than typing your SKU names. Semantic search over your catalog turns zero-result searches into sessions that convert, and zero-results is usually the single most under-watched number in a store.
  • Product data enrichment Generating consistent descriptions, extracting attributes from supplier feeds, normalizing categories and filling the gaps that break your filters. Unglamorous, and it improves both conversion and organic rankings at once.
  • Merchandising and recommendation Ranking and recommendations trained on your own behavior data rather than a generic engine. Small models on your data beat large models on everyone's data for this, and cost a fraction to run.
  • Returns and chargeback handling Triaging return requests, spotting fraud patterns, and assembling chargeback evidence packets against issuer deadlines. This is where AI quietly recovers margin, and nobody puts it on a homepage.

If you only do one of these, do semantic search. It is usually two sprints, it works on your existing catalog, and zero-result searches are the clearest signal of lost revenue that any store produces.

Our process

How We Work

Four stages, with the cheapest one first. If discovery says the project should not go ahead, you hear it in week one rather than month six.

01

Discover & Align

We begin by evaluating your workflows, existing systems and business objectives to identify the gaps that actually cost you time. Clear goals, risk mitigation and measurable benchmarks are agreed before any implementation begins.

02

Design & Architect

We design secure, scalable architecture aligned to your operational and compliance requirements. The focus stays on integration contracts, data modelling, security posture and the non-functional targets we will be held to.

03

Build & Integrate

Delivery runs in two-week sprints with a working demo at the end of each, integrated with your existing applications rather than beside them. You get a staging environment from the first sprint.

04

Optimize & Scale

After launch we monitor performance, reliability, cost and security posture, then refine to improve efficiency and long-term agility. Most clients expand scope during this phase rather than before it.

Audit first, then build only what pays back. Core Web Vitals stay in the acceptance criteria through launch.

Pricing

Why Digital Aptech

Why Choose Digital Aptech?

Here is what differentiates Digital Aptech in delivering e-commerce development for US and UK organizations.

01

Speed Treated as Revenue

LCP under 2.5s on a mid-range Android over 4G, enforced in CI. On commerce this is a measurable share of sessions, not a Lighthouse score to screenshot.

02

Platform Chosen on Fit

Below roughly $20M in revenue Shopify is almost always right, and we say so even though a custom build bills more. Custom earns its place with configurators and marketplaces.

03

Replatforming Without a Traffic Collapse

URL and redirect mapping is planned before any build work starts, structured data carried across, Search Console monitored closely for eight weeks.

04

AI Past the Chatbot

Semantic search first, then catalog enrichment and recommendations. Zero-result search rate is the clearest signal of lost revenue any store produces.

05

Proven Engineering Track Record

Backed by 1,700+ successful technology engagements and a 4.81 out of 5 client satisfaction rating, Digital Aptech delivers consistently across industries and project sizes.

06

Global, Multi-Industry Delivery

Organizations across 34+ countries and 22+ industries rely on Digital Aptech, with a US office in Glendora, California and delivery hours covering Pacific through GMT.

07

Structured, Risk-Controlled Implementation

Defined roadmaps, workflow assessments and phased delivery reduce downtime, remove bottlenecks and keep production environments stable through change.

08

Recognized for Technical Excellence

Forbes India Select 200, Clutch 1000, GoodFirms and multiple global industry awards recognize consistent delivery standards and service reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A custom Shopify build starts at $14,000, about £11,000. Headless and custom platforms start at $38,000 and typically run to $160,000. Most mid-market merchants land between $25,000 and $70,000. The free audit produces a real number before you commit.

  • Shopify, unless you have a specific reason not to. Below roughly $20M in revenue it is almost always the right answer, and a custom build is a liability you maintain forever. Custom earns its place with complex configurators, quote-to-order, marketplaces or unusual subscription rules.

  • A separately built frontend calling your commerce platform through an API. It is worth it when content and commerce need to be one experience, when your catalog is large enough that theme performance cannot be fixed, or when you run several storefronts off one backend. Otherwise it adds cost and complexity for little return.

  • Yes, and we put specific targets in the acceptance criteria rather than describing it as an outcome. On commerce, LCP is closely tied to conversion, so we treat it as a revenue metric. We measure field data, not just Lighthouse, because they routinely disagree.

  • This is the single biggest risk in a replatform and it is manageable. URL and redirect mapping is planned before any build work starts, structured data is carried across, and we monitor Search Console closely for the first eight weeks. Traffic dips are normal for two to three weeks; collapses are a planning failure.

  • Semantic search first, by a wide margin. Then product data enrichment, which improves conversion and organic rankings at once. Then recommendations trained on your own behavior data. Chatbots are the most commonly built and the least valuable, and we will push back if that is where you want to start.

  • Yes, and it is usually where the real operational value sits. NetSuite, Sage, QuickBooks, Akeneo, ShipStation and most 3PL APIs. Where no API exists we build a flat file or EDI path, which is still common in distribution.

  • Yes. Currency, sales tax and VAT, address formats, spelling and shipping expectations get designed in rather than discovered. A UK customer presented with a zip code field will usually leave, and that is entirely avoidable.

  • Load testing against realistic peak traffic, a performance budget locked in CI, a code freeze window agreed in advance, and a rollback plan. The growth retainer includes this. It should be done in September, not November.

  • Often yes, and we would rather do that than sell you a rebuild. The audit tells you whether the problem is fixable in place, which for theme-based stores carrying too many apps it usually is. Roughly a third of our audits end in a fix rather than a project.

  • We build so that card data stays with your payment provider and never touches your servers, which keeps your PCI scope to the smallest questionnaire. We are not a QSA and will not sign off your compliance, but we will architect so it is straightforward.

  • A growth retainer from $2,900 a month covering development capacity, performance monitoring, conversion work and peak readiness. Or ad-hoc support if you have your own team and only need occasional help.
